Hall of Dispelling Clouds The Hall of Dispelling Clouds (Paiyundian) is a splendid structure with red columns and a roof covered with golden yellow tiles. It is built on a platform which is framed by white marble balusters and adorned with bronze dragons, phoenixes and vessels. Inside the hall sits a throne, flanked by a screen, incense burners and fans.
Neatly aligned with the Tower of Buddhist Incense behind it, the Hall of Dispelling Clouds was built by Emperor Qianlong for his mother on her 60th birthday. A century later, Empress Cixi initially used the hall as her sleeping quarters, before deciding that it didn’t do to be so close to Buddha, and so she moved to the Hall of Joy and Longevity .
The Hall of Dispelling Clouds The hall of Dispelling Clouds is the most dignified building in the Summer Palace. Originated from the Temple for Praying Great Gratitude and Wishing for Longevity built by Emperor Qianlong within the Garden of Clear Ripples, it was burned down together with the Garden of Clear Ripples in 1860 and rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi to celebrate her birthday.
